About 16juin

The makers

16JUIN is a collective of talented artisans, who create the finest custom furniture.

16JUIN (16th of June in French) is the birthday of both company founders – artisans Ilkka Salo and Jonathan Beaulieu

Both have enjoyed working with their hands through the years. They made their first concrete table back in 2011 after a trip in Murmansk, Russia. That’s where they found their inspiration: A city of concrete and steel.

Ilkka has been experimenting with concrete for over a decade now while Jonathan has sharpened his skills in steel fabrication. Together they will deliver the finest furniture for your space.

Experience is key

Our concrete products are handcrafted in our workshops in Helsinki and Southern France. Through the years we have gained knowledge in casting different types of concrete. Our number one blend is an inhouse brewed recipee where the main ingredients are cement, sand, water and fiber. We source our main ingredients locally and we spend countless hours testing new products and recipes.

After years of experimenting and learning from world famous concrete makers we can now offer a high end concrete that is suitable for furniture making. Our concrete is extremely hard, dense, soft to touch and easy to maintain.

A 10 year experience in building custom furniture has led us to offer high end products at a competitive price. We understand the technical properties of different materials which ables us to offer products that last for ages to come.

B2B or B2C, we will always find the right way to deliver your project in time at competitive price.

building dream FURNITURE

Towards greener Concrete

For over a decade we have had our hands in concrete on a daily basis. We have learned from hundreds of mistakes and we test new recipes every week.

We use a high performance concrete called UHPC that is reinforced with fibers.

According to the project we work on,  we tweak our recipes using different additives to our mix.

Most of our mixes are GFRC (glass fiber reinforced concrete)  or ECC (Engineered Cementitious Composite) mixes. The advantage of using the above mixes is that you can build lighter pieces (meaning with less concrete) due to the high flexural and compressive properties of our mixes.

In order to reduce our carbon footprint, our raw materials are locally sourced (e.g. in our workshop in Finland, our sand, that stands for almost 50% of our concrete mixes, comes from the quarries of Nilsiä and Karvia).

We also mix recycled grounded glass to our concrete in order to produce a denser and harder concrete.

Our leftover concrete is used to make smaller objects or layered concrete pieces (link). Like this our concrete waste is non existent.

The forms we cast in are used over and over until they become smaller molds.
